Affray is a public disorder offence. It is charge that is used by Police where they allege a violent encounter has occurred. This can occur in private or in public and can range from a violent fight between two people to an all-in brawl.

The charge of affray is becoming more common as in some cases, it can be easier for the State to prove than an assault. This is concerning as the maximum penalty for affray is significantly higher than for most assaults.
